GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring tripeptide that binds copper(II) with high affinity. The peptide was first isolated from human plasma, where its concentration declines measurably with donor age, and that observation is what put it into the tissue-remodelling research literature. The copper coordination is not incidental to the mechanism, it is the mechanism: the complex acts as a copper carrier, and the metal is required for the enzymatic activity the compound is studied against.
