It is studied in controlled laboratory settings for melanocortin receptor binding, cAMP signalling, and central neuroendocrine pathways in hypothalamic and limbic tissue models.

PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a cyclic seven-residue peptide derived from alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The cyclic backbone constrains the pharmacophore and is what shifts receptor selectivity away from MC1R, the pigmentation receptor, toward the central subtypes MC3R and MC4R. That selectivity profile is the reason it is used as a pharmacological tool to separate central melanocortin signalling from peripheral pigmentary effects.
